On Disliking Surprises

Often when someone catches me unaware It seems an intrusion that I least expected Makes me wary of surprises, I must declare Most of the time, I prefer to be neglected. It seems an intrusion that I least expected I had already made plans for what I’d do Most of the time, I prefer to be neglected, Surprisers fail to consider the other shoe. I had already made plans for what I’d do Oh, I know they have the best of intentions, Surprisers fail to consider the other shoe. Still, I try to avoid disdain, I must mention. Oh, I know they have the best intentions Those who get a kick out of surprising me Still, I try to avoid disdain, I must mention, Being surprised doesn’t fill me with glee. Those who get a kick out of surprising me Makes me wary of surprises, I must declare Still, I try to avoid disdain, I must mention Often when someone catches me unaware.

There are two kinds of surprises, happy ones or sad ones. The happy ones are wonderful, but if the news is sad, I'd rather not be surprised by it.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment on my poem, Jenna. I just prefer always knowing what's going on. I suppose I'm a control freak!

A pantoum I could have never written, as I am one who loves to be surprised.

Oh, not me, Caren. Surprises completely unnerve me. I'm glad you enjoy them.

I'm inclined to agree Milton, it's as if you're being taken out of your comfort zone against your will. As you say they mean will but you shouldn't be put in a position that's going to make you uncomfortable. Then you're thinking, they're thinking ungrateful so and so. You don't need that in your life. You are exactly spot-on, as far as I'm concerned. Tell me in advance what you are planning so I can plan to spend the time with you.
