On Being Human

It's hard being a human being,
much easier to be a lion or dog
or a giraffe or even a fish, and
much more fun to be an eagle!

It's hard always having to think,
to weigh, to count, to decide,
perchance to reject, or regret.
It's hard to fit yourself to life,
to make do with what there is,
to slide into a lie, to tell truths.

It's hard to live in your dreams
when dreams slip quietly away,
night after night, in worlds you
will forget by break of day...
though some sense may linger,
teasing you that life, this life
of flesh and blood and tears
and hope just... is not real.

It's hard to life with your fears,
be they petty or grand, catching
a cold to catching your death.
It's hard to see suffering, pain,
or even mere sadness: any loss
tears at your unbidden soul....

It's hard being a human being,
much easier to be a lion or dog.

That might depend on who your owner is--did you see the movie called, as I remember, 'Life of a Dog'?

I want to come back to my next life as my great-grandchildren's dog. I think that would be perfect!
