Olympic Dreams

As a seventeen year old competitive swimmer,
the other swimmer I looked up to was Mark Spitz,
he was a multiple gold medal winner,
a wonder in the water, a swimming blitz.

I had Olympic dreams,
my element was the aquatic,
but life took me in another direction, it seemed,
the lure of going to practices seemed less exotic.

How I loved the smell of the pool chlorine,
I sliced through the water as if a dolphin,
I so cherished the marine,
but other obligations needed to fit in.

The working world was calling,
and aspiring for the Game's gold had to
be retired,
but I was elated Mark had world records
falling,
and I still feel inspired.

As another Summer Olympics comes to
a close,
I'm proud of the athletes who devote their
time and sweat to their sport,
and I surely suppose,
I'll always treasure my long ago youth
in New York. ~

Hi Gershon, Mark Spitz was thrilling to watch, what a phenom. The 6 a.m. practices, then again at 5 p.m. at night were too much, I had other obligations. But, I'll always remember my swimming days of youth. Thanks so much, good poetry friend, for reading my nostalgia poem. Am Yisrael Chai. :)

Wow, that takes me back Regina, he won gold after gold, amazing. They all follow a strict regime and have to be 100% dedicated making many sacrifices, I couldn't do it. Enjoy your weekend. Tom

Hi Tom, Mark Spitz was so thrilling to watch. Oh, the good old days. Yes, the regimen was too much with 6 a.m. swimming practice, then at 5 p.m. in the evening, I had other obligations. But I'll never forget my swimming days of youth. Thank you so much for reading and commenting on my nostalgia poem. Many blessings :)

Hi Regina, I really enjoyed your poem. I can feel the talent in you. How passionately you speak of the smell of chlorinated water in a swimming pool. Who knows you wouldn't have been an Olympic medal winner, if circumstances had been positive. You are in awe of all athletes who dedicate their time and energy for this sport.
