Oh, Wounded Warrior

Oh, Wounded Warrior.

Battle lines and battle scars
hidden in plain sight.
Many of us now asking
was it really worth the fight?

Some of us wear uniforms.
Some of us wear shame.
It doesn’t really matter.
The outcome’s still the same.

Missing limbs, missing minds.
Broken, tossed about.
Whipped by winds of chaos.
So often left in doubt.

It’s in the heart, it’s in the eyes.
You’ll see it if you look.
A ghostly haunting of battles lost
And, the life it nearly took.

A belief in life, beyond this war.
To hold if I should dare.
Oh, wounded soldier, hear me now,
Tis YOU who must take care.

So, lay it down, your heavy heart.
Rest in grasses, tall.
Undo your straps of armor.
Let stay where they may fall.

Your war, its time has ended.
At home, your family waits.
Battle scarred and mettle tested,
Tis here life’s meaning takes.

So, settle in oh weary soldier.
Lay down your weary head.
Calm your restless spirit
in the words your children said.

Your children and their children,
Ah yes, there’s so much more.
Here before you, on this day
is the love that you fought for.

So, take it with you. Take with care.
This love that you’ve been given.
Take it with a greatful heart
and know you’ve been forgiven.
