Notes About The Poem

Credit to Reverend Neal Jones of Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon Pennsylvania for his advocacy on this issue.

Of Pews and Parties

The "Separation of Church and State",
it has become a heated debate.
Our founders imagined a separating wall
intended to be there shielding us all.
Some took the shield and made it a sword
so liberty for many would be ignored.

Christians have ruled these many years
losing their grip is one of their fears.
The liberal left and the righteous right
are engaged in this insidious fight.

The crux is abortion, marriage, race, gender:
where literal thinkers find many an offender.
No surprise when people say, "my faith is best",
while plotting to restrict beliefs of the rest.

People are rebelling against the church in its current form. In having read the bible several times, I fear most people/ Churches miss the point. God gives us free will and the institution seeks to limit us. I do not follow rules out of fear but rather out of affection and thankfulness for a gift beyond measure. I am called to love I am not called to enforce.

You should live on the West Coast.)) If you were a boy,in elementary school, you would be taught to question your sexuality. Maybe you are a girl? Believers are slapped silly here and beaten. Conservatives cannot speak in my State without violence. Even the teaching of the Greek history is considered evil a menace Such is life, Panagiota

Ah yes, Panagiota, intolerance puts a damper on everything. We all need to listen and care to what each other is doing and saying. The tribal mentality is crushing us. Thanks for the read and kind comment.

If you can make just ten people think, and they can make ten more people think, and your poem can make ten more people think this would be a great start. "Losing their grip is one of their fears." I truly do see this. And more often daily.

You get it Caren. You always do. Thank you so much as usual for noticing and commenting. This is a somewhat more subtle cause, important nonetheless.
