They grow and shed their complete shell like a snake to accommodate their body. I have found empty shells still clinging to a tree trunks SuZ

as kids we used to catch "grasshoppers". Haven't seen any around in decades...and the cities pigeon population has been greatly reduced by the influx of high rise dwelling hawks....ah well, nature will adapt
