Odonata Anisoptera

Wings of irridescent hue
A body shining 'lectric blue
Multi-facet eyes that see
a world that's strange to you and me

Those compound eyes that give it sight
can see in ultra-violet light
They cannot see in yellow/red
but blue and shorter waves instead

There's power in the way they fly
Swooping low and darting high
Four wings that beat the air so quick
perform an aerobatic trick

Its wings are just a hazy blur
as it flies past with a 'whirr'
Then it stops quite suddenly
and hovers there for all to see

Just for a second it does remain
and then it darts away again
A thing of beauty and of grace
with wings like irridescent lace

but ...

Behind that beauty that entrances
with its swooping zig-zag dances
lies a mind that's cruel and cold
when it's prey it does enfold

Those aerobatics in the sun
are not a creature having fun
Every twist and swerve and stunt
Their only purpose is the hunt

A butterfly caught unaware
is pulled to pieces in the air
That entrancing airborn thriller
is nothing but a deadly killer

Thanks Jan, such beauty and such cruelty in one creature.
