Ode To Maya Angelou

Maya, Maya
Your essence sings to my soul
the breath of your spirit
bathed me in my mother's womb
when you were zero years old

We touched fingertips across time
where there is no beginning or end

Ode to Maya
my inner depths reign you glorious
you branded the keys
to doors that were shackled
with indifference and blame

For the trails you journeyed
while you carried me on your back
Me and others like me

Ode to Maya
a song of many words
A command to respect and recipient of dues paid
owed to our ancestors

I lay claim to your inheritance to pass the torch
for generations to come
I inhale your struggles
though the details are mostly invisible
I reverence your efforts and bountiful accomplishments

I serenade your extentialism
in a melody of sincere wisdom

A quintessential woman
to be blessed by the applause
of the universe
to become a sin if ever forgotten
