Objective

"OBJECTIVE"

for some,
things change and it usually
leads to a heartbreak.
the garbage disposal still
turns,
the weeds still find a way to
grow and
it's all of what remains of a
love that held promise.
the pain then becomes
confusion and
everything that seemed wrong
either turns right or
just doesn't seem so bad.
when the past disappears and
you know
there is something still
there,
the freeways never run out of
cars.
the radio conceives a
playlist pulled from your
library of love.
we often think this can be
used for every person
we are with but truth be
told,
it only applies to one.
she makes positive that you
have your cigarettes,
you make positive that she
drinks enough water to
rid herself of the
dehydration she suffers from.
we walked the beach for two
days.
we walked as if we both
needed a break from the
heartbreak.

we did.

we used to walk as if
tomorrow wasn't coming.
today,
we knew tomorrow would come
and with it,
a new objective for an old
promise.
as the pier licked our feet,
as the birds watched as we
played in the water,
as the sun covered two it
knew it couldn't separate,
we managed to be real about
our reality.
in the end,
we had the power to turn
heartbreak into a break
from the heart.
we set course for a new
objective that we both
never really let go of.
the objective of that day was
simple but we both
turned it into something
else.
