Nun of That, Now

Turning right against the light’s Illegal in New Yawk. That rule’s observed by drivers, Not by those who run or walk. In other places, no such law Exists, so often plates Of cars which turn when they should not Reflect their different states. And that is why I was surprised When, right in front of me, A New York car ignored the red And turned illegally. What made it even weirder Was the driver was a nun! If ticketed, I wonder ‘bout The story she’d have spun.

I had my share of nuns in grammar school (all eight years!). Most were good as teachers and I was a good learner, except in certain aspects of arithmetic – fractions and division. One nun, however, was I didn't like too much; she could be mean at times. She wasn't close to pretty either and had front teeth that bucked like a beaver's! / Maurice

I guess she was not of the "flying" order...I love your little insights about life in New York, Ilene.

What a wonderful tale my friend. I love the way you find poetry in everything you see. I'm positive that no policeman would dare ticket her.

She would have said my clothing got in my eyes and the cops would have said don’t make a habit of it. Sorry… couldn’t resist. Another finely observed and exquisitely rhymed write, Ilene. Your poems always sound like they really happened… my guess is they did.

Ha! Just what I’d expect from you, Terry - making me laugh! It’s very rare for a poem of mine to not be based on something that really happened…

Thank you for observing for us readers, the mystery of a nun making an illegal right turn in New Yawk. Perhaps the daughter of God didn't realize what state she was in. How often we don't realize how we break the rules of the state. I'll remember next time I cross the line.

Loved this poem Ilene. So well written and entertaining. Had a big smile on my face when reading the last stanza. So good. I’m trying to think of what she would have said. Really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing :)
