Numbers
Numbers,
like years, are counted
one before zero
five after six
three in a crowd
ten high evolved and proud
base one or base two
life itself counted askew.
Age splitting years to decades
a lifetime short or long
a century turning round for a song.
It's as if it's a play
a comedy, a tragedy,
somewhere in between.
Don't count the years
slip away the tears
hold tight the laughter
and the smile
the numbers record every mile.
