Nowhen
Nowhen
Between times
between days
Darkness held sway
Every sound’s alarming
in a primitive way
A pale hope of morning
over the roof horizon’s shore
heralded a new creation
Let there be light once more
And the first bird
broke the breathless silence
Fluted thread of bold announcement
Let praise commence
I sat in the damp air
warming grass underfoot
Thoughts uncrowded, time suspended
worship, the heart’s first work
A rustle
a movement
a little fox nosing
in front of my seat
looked up
started back
ducked and looked again
crabwise scuttle
shadows scurried
there were two
one more look
foxy silhouette by the hedge
then gone
The breeze touched branches
and dozing trees stirred
the piping chorus filled the air like streamers
and dawn changed shift
with the singing stars
