Nothingness

God made everything out of nothing
but the nothingness shows through.
                                  Paul Valery

Only silence wells
in the dark throat of the evening
and anything you hear
is of the world's making
or your own mind
filling up the empty spaces.

Music is made this way
and poetry, as they try
to give substance and form
to what is missing,
to fill that gnawing void
with a note or word.

Works fluoresce
as exotic creatures do
in the dark of deep seas,
small, faint flickers
punctuating the unknowable
with momentary life.
And so it is,

we are drawn towards
a centre that seems everywhere,
a nothingness rolled
into a ball, the circumference
of the infinite that resides
within us all.

A beautiful poem Paul, infinity works simultaneously outwardly and inwardly, our consciousness is the medium that gives this center of nothingness meaning, our poetic perception does indeed try bring substance to this gnawing void, which you effortlessly achieve here, great existential pondering, cheers David

Thankyou David, thought packed and meaningful commentary. Aways value your clear summaries. The concept of nothingness is challenging...a place where language breaks down and definition is impossible. Mystics, poets and composers get close, even the summits of mathematics fall short. And yet is is the centre of all things. Trouble is we try to give it a human face, endow it with the limitations of our own attributes. Cheers Paul
