Noise

I look at the very loud crowd
and wait for the traffic to quiet down

I put my hands over my ears and try
to shut out all the unwanted noise

I close my eyes and pretend it doesn't exist
But the clamor of sound continues

I go to my room and close the door
take a deep breath and forget the cacophony

I plug in my iPod and try to drown it out
singing along doesn't work very well though

I frown and just lie back on the bed
and stare at the ceiling for awhile

I sigh and I just stop trying...
letting the echoes of my past continue their chatter
