Nobody knows
Nobody knows
Eleven years ago, in a cold, dark night
I killed a stranger 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like my best friend
I had seen my wife in my best friend's arms
Looking through our bedroom window
I didn't let them know
I spoke not a word
But my tears dried up
My anger became like a stone
Nobody knew I had returned home
So I dressed like my best friend used to do
Shot a stranger 'neath the town hall light
And then I left town that dark night
No longer looking like my best friend
We all have treasures we call our own
Mine are these hills I call my home
Dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
And the wedding speech my best friend wrote
He could've given an alibi
He would've taken her honor
So I knew nobody would get to know
I rode into the town on the day of his hanging
She stood beside me and shed not a tear
But her hand was clinging onto mine
Eleven years ago, on a cold dark night
We stood by his grave
And sorrow can become a need for love
She looked so good in that long black veil
She doesn't know, nobody knows
Nobody sees, nobody knows but me
And just maybe, that bard
And a bottle of Tennessee Whiskey
Nobody knows
Nobody sees
Nobody knows
Just me
