No Sweet Thing Today

I’ve given it little thought,
but I suppose it will follow me,
and today it has.
Today it followed me,
maybe as I left home
and ventured to the bitter desk
in my bitter office.
It followed with no sweet treats,
but with vinegar, perhaps,
or battery acid,
inappropriately bottled
with vanilla milk.
My coffee camouflaged the despair
for a moment,
but fine coffee and vanilla milk
do not follow as bitterness does.
And I know it’s no good
crying over spilled milk,
or vanilla milk ruined by vinegar
or battery acid,
but it might stay with me today.

That which we can not avoid we must bear with a solid countenance my friend. Life being both the good and the bad of it. The ponderings of a keen mind and true poetic heart! '... A fav....

Like a child plays follow the leader, negativity seems to follows us the same way. No way!! I want nothing to do with it. Yuck!! It seems to stay. So true are your words Lawrence. Try to stay away from the battery acid. Just sayin. ~ Brandy

I have sometimes unseeing taken drunk a glass of juice by instead got water—crystal clear, pure water, which at that moment tasted as though it had been ladled from a sewer. But the moment is easily dismissed by nothing more than a pleasant smile or tender deed. So well expressed my gentle friend.

The solemnness of this poem gives me pause. You also use "might" which adds hope.

It does show up from time to time--we all feel it, Lawrence. Good thing though it retreats eventually. I hear the gloom my friend--tomorrow will be a brighter day. Emotions brilliantly expressed.
