No Promises

Don’t tell me how you will always be there, That’s a promise you can’t keep. Don’t declare that you will never hurt me, Love always hurts. Don’t offer to give up your dreams, needs, or desires, I don’t want your sacrifice. Don’t entice me with affirmations of love and affection, Truth will always out. Don’t make me feel like the sun rises and sets on me, For the moon always casts a shadow at night. Don’t assume that I am a damsel in distress, I can rescue myself. Don’t profess to love me more than anyone before or after, Life offers no such guarantees. Don’t offer promises to soften the fractured beauty of what’s real, A harsh reality outlasts a promise broken.
