No Other Month Like August
The county fairs, the corn on a cob, the state fairs.
The Tilt-a-Whirls, lights flashing,
wonderful in the morning, but a sheer delight at night.
Family reunions with everything melting
Children taking advantage of those last few days of summer.
Parents letting them stay up late, becoming heroes for it.
August, the month that seals up June and July
The month that begins the back to school march
Red white and blue begin disappearing from shelves
Replaced by spiral notebooks for a mere seventeen cents.
Children are trying to hang on to their flip flops,
But their mothers are insisting they try on "school shoes."
August. Nothing like her.
No other month compares to her
duties, and unique readiness to
get rid of the other months and settle down to school.
