No Laughing Matter

Clashes on T.V.
 innocents dead
shattered glass, shattered lives
Even the clowns fail to
  rouse us now
we walk
  in the rain
   together, we gaze into
the crystal waters
   of the lake
down by the willows
  the leaves are rustling
    and you can hear
raindrops strike them
Somewhere, somehow in a different
   life
we laughed at this
we felt above
      the tooth and claw
struggle of nature
Now we gaze into the lake
     Hoping for a relief
from the fighting
from the deep hatreds
which
    seemed to have exploded
on our blue orb
