New Lovers

Lying like dappled shadows at dusk New lovers talk After a long time—oh beautiful, oh silver, oh mercurial time!-- Our stories can be excellent in the telling And I am thinking of another night Of he who spoke so softly the truth “Whether you like it or not It would be better to listen to the wind, to the sea, And not to those who talk too much to you.” Still we go on gathering up and letting go New Lover's talk From just beneath the surface of familiar things Our words, our illusions, return Sometimes I awaken at midnight to you And to you in silence my memories return.

Jose--Hmmm...I don't like to dictate what my poems mean to people, what they bring with them to the poem counts for much. But the 'deep thoughts' behind this poem for me is that "we tell ourselves stories" and "tell our own stories" of ourselves as we journey through life and our experiences. Sometimes in hindsight, when the story we have told ourselves has acquired a life or ending of its own, truer messages come through--a time for no words.
