Notes About The Poem

Written 22nd August,  2026 for My Worst Enemy Is… Poetry Contest sponsored by Margarita Lillico

Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all - the apathy of human beings. Helen Keller

My Worst Enemy Is Apathy

The glaciers loosen from the poles, their ancient silence drowned, while oceans claim the homes of those who wait on higher ground. The forest burns beneath a sky turned copper, black, and red; we bring relief when flames pass by, then feed the fire instead. A tiger fades, a coral dies, a songbird leaves the air; we mourn beneath disaster’s eyes, then act as if unaware. My worst enemy is Apathy, her hands refuse to move; she treats the wound for all to see, but will not face what we must improve.

We talk about being good Samaritans and responsible stewards of the earth, yet honor greedy ruthlessness as traits to emulate. Apathy finds fertile ground in hypocricy. Ironically, Helen Keller saw more clearly than most. Cheers, Robert

You're right / Helen Keller's right. Man motivated can tackle any challenge. Man unmotivated is run over by track shoes with spikes.

And those spikes don't always motivate.

I hope your poem is read by those doubting politicians. Is it too late to do something about it? We'll find out next year and the year after that, even though it's staring at us in the face.

There is a chance we can reverse some of the damage done but it needs to be now not after we talk about it, we know what needs to be done, lets just do it.🌎🌐

Climate change - our biggest problem (my view) - an emergency that must be dealt with on all levels, now.

Brutal and sharp imagery, gentle rhythm — that contrast makes it sting. "We mourn... then act as if unaware" says it all — the gap between feeling and doing.
