My Winter
Winter brings flurries—more of activities than
snow, since the climate is moderate where I live.
At soccer and basketball games, I’m a great fan,
lending grandkids and teams all the support I can give.
Winter brings Christmas, with its two marvelous sides.
I sing of the unique birth of the Holy One
at church, pray, and give to support those who abide
in foreign lands to tell the lost about God’s Son.
I joyously shop, wrap gifts, cook, decorate,
and attend about a dozen parties and meals.
The sight of Christmas trees, wreaths, and candles elate
me. Seeing kids in the mall Santa’s lap makes me feel
like a kid again. Then comes January First,
a day of deep soul-searching and, in my beliefs,
new beginnings, when I experience a burst
of joy and hope for my future—however brief
or lengthy it may be! Soon comes Valentine’s Day.
If you ever have trouble sleeping, let me know.
I’ll tell you how I spend that day, and right away
you’ll be snoring. As winter wanes and spring makes its slow
approach, I write poems, take walks, read mysteries,
share time with the grandkids, and remain active in
church and at home. Eventually, I feel the breeze
losing its bite. What a blessed winter each has been!
