My Wife's Eyes

When I'm 206 and it's been
A month since she left
I look forward to the question
"What did you love best?"

"Her eyes" I'll reply
Beaming with joy
"Those eyes which
Could go from stern straight to coy"

They're brown
Ordinary to most
But none know them like I
My greatest boast

For through her eyes
She saw me
In delight, and sorrows,
In despair, and giddy glee

They saw our children
And victories and defeats
They saw us toil,
Break and beat

Back the seasons
That turned faster and hoped they'd stop
Only to discover
That when you count, you've got quiet a lot

So, in 175 years from now
When they are closed
My heart will still skip a beat
Thinking of those eyes I chose
