My un-tender feet

run on the beach
when I first hit the sand
and my hair is down
and I don't have makeup on.

I found a shark tooth,
a little one
and I carried it
miles down
the shoreline

on the top
of my tongue
to keep it safe

so I could show it off
when I got home

and say to my mom
"I found one!"

something less
than valuable,
but memorable
to her and
the man she loves.

I ran barefoot,
Lady Godiva style
on the beach tonight

I saw an oyster bed
at low tide
when no one else
was looking

and a seagull waited
for a sand crab
to surface
for dinnertime.

Children were crying
and laughing,
and adults were fishing,
walking seriously,
looking for shark teeth,
and/or smiling.

I am back home
at the ocean,
where my soul sings
and I am alive.
