My Skin, a Warning Sign
People warn me
That as a girl,
I should be careful
Of dating guys
That aren't white...
Me being a white girl,
That is...
White girls, to them,
Are a status symbol;
Haven't I noticed
That black rappers
Like white girls?
Yes, well maybe
To them blonde hair
And pale skin
Might look a lot like
Gold and silver when
Seen under club lighting;
Personally, I would like
To think that I am
More person than
Precious metal-
My boyfriend's skin
Is brown;
He views me through
Direct sunlight
And we talk about
Being human-
He tells me that
He loves me
With the lights off-
He tells me that
I am beautiful
When he reads
My poetry...
