My Heart Sinks

My heart sinks, my mind freezes
I seek a halted breath
A tear struggles not to be shed
As a coldness shivers within my soul.

Death!! Bastardly and cowardly
Has seized me from a distance
Yet scorched me with its flame
Incinerating my fading beliefs.

I have not succumbed to the numbness
Nor given in to the fury
I will still cherish all life
And mourn the sadness of our time.

Piercing commentary on our tragedy-filled times, John. Guarding against numbness is certainly one of the orders of the day. ~ Gershon
