My Friend

We were never a couple,
   though some may say
   or think we were,
but we were the best of friends.
Growing up together
we shared both mischief and challenges
   that married couples and lovers
   could never understand.
Children’s secrets and adventures
shaped us to who we were
and life began to change us,
   hand in hand.
There were those times
when we went our separate ways
   and on occasion touched
   by letter or by phone.
Somehow we found our way back
to those shared dreams and hopes of home
   in what seemed
   a lifetime of long ago.
It seems the years
  have not managed to change
  or keep us apart
despite our different paths and views.
Friendships both waxes and wanes through time
but no truer friend than you
   can ever again
   be found.

A perfect friend. You may drift away from time to time but always find your way back to each other.

This is so nice. And so true about "old friends". They knew us before we learned to put up guards, and liked us all the same. And still do!
