My First Valentine

Once upon a distant time,
When she was eight and I was nine,
We sat close together in third grade
And exchanged the paper hearts we'd made
That said, in childish scrawl, "Please be my valentine."

Often when I feel old and gray,
I can still recall that special day.
Thought faded now with time and tears,
Her heart rests 'mongst my souvenirs,
A sweet reminder of when I first gave my heart away.

Thanks, Ghairo. And yes, she did, but we probably would have done so, anyway. Happy V Day to you.
