Notes About The Poem
Silent One's Father Contest...31 May 26...Happy birthday, Dad last May 17!
My First Hero
Awakened from a mid-sleep tingle
of the wind ,your absent body drifts
gently like a formless cloud into
night’s minutes: a holy air which
smells of musk, weaving through
a quiet stillness of tender love’s fervor.
Just there, graced calm lingers mildly in our
own space: the warm embrace of light
whiffs as your foggy arms cuddles my entire spirit…
and this gentle evening turns gracious,
remembering our wrestles with diaper rashes,
your watchful eyes on my first date,
the carnival rides of college days, and
crowning you as hero against brawn of bullies;
then slowly knowing your life has reached
its final time: the pain melts like
colored mist as loops of distance widen,
your beautiful shadow slowly, slowly
evaporating… I miss those kites of all summers
gliding, oh, the flavor of beer on your face...
as my breaths now return to this one
and only dream-like visit, I still reel
with a question and tormented gaze…
“ Dad, why did you have to leave so suddenly?”
