My Canary Sings This January
As I sit Precariously
Listening to my Canary
Life is weary this January
Embattled by the long and scary
Year of Covid when wary times tarry
Too long for us to know little mercy and carries
Us to the threshold of this 'wits end' of heated adversary
From the cold quarantine as threatened democracy parries
With questions of justice and equality on its 158th anniversary
Of the Emancipation Proclamation that fiercely relinquished slavery
All men created equal under one flag while given its fight for bravery
With all worn hearts, minds and well-being knowing that the contrary
Revisions to our happiness, 'freedom and justice for all' now quietly buries
Our souls and hearts in this beloved country to try and live in peace this
January
As I sit and ponder tomorrow from my desk listening to the song
of my sweet Canary
Perhaps I will open the door to his freedom so his song belongs to this world
so very weary
