My Brother

My brother had his friends
and I had mine.
We were playing
in a tree that was
easy to climb.
He was showing off
jumping from limb to limb
only this time he missed
and I watched him fall.
One bone is broken
his pride was a little hurt.
Bad news for my Mother
who just got off from work.

Like a hero
our friends carried him to my Mother.
Who showed more anger than alarm?
Her ten-year-old showoff
had just broken his arm.
Didn't come to any real harm.
At least he wasn't bleeding
and hadn't broken his neck.
Sad now the Hospital
will be getting most
of my Mother's small check.
