Notes About The Poem

Kai's Mulberry Trees and Butterflies Contest ~ March 19, 2025

Mulberries and Monarchs

Each year I plant an herbal garden
very near a stand of mulberry trees
and every Spring when they're in bloom
they attract butterflies and honey bees.

This morning, as I tended the sweet basil,
a young Monarch landed close to my hand.
Then, a cloud of them swirled around me,
and flew back to the mulberry trees to land.

For that moment I dared not move an inch,
mesmerized by the wooshing of their wings.
It was so memorable, that I'll never forget.
Their humming was like a song Nature sings.

I watched them flutter. Thirty, maybe more
before clinging on to leaves of vibrant green.
Their bold colors of black, orange and gold
looked just like petals as I watched them glean.

Dear Lin, I just had to tell you how much I loved your piece and you may have a winner. The butterflies and the mulberry trees brought a huge smile to my face on this first day of spring. I love it when I can almost feel the magic of the moment especially as you described. Your connection to nature shines through beautifully, and it’s so inspiring! A great poem makes everything feel a bit more alive. Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Nine days late with responding to you, Daniel...forgive me. Reading your gracious comments reminded me of what I'd written, lol...Not senile just busy with many writings lately. Thank you for being such a supportive friend.

Beautiful Lin. They are amazing creatures. How remarkable is it that the offspring navigate to the same place in Mexico every year? You describe something that one would be very lucky to experience. Sounds wonderful. Smiles!

My daughter has a milkweed garden and when I visit I sit very still near it, and they fly all around and some land on me. She takes some inside if the weather get a bit too chilly and it's been educational to watch them eat and eat and then form a chrysalis and hatch. Watching them is a wonderful experience. Thanks, Duke.
