Notes About The Poem

Mr Capers

As a social worker in my middle 20's,
I worked with elderly people in a center
Designed for them. It was a place of daily
Lunches, socialization, and recreation.

My 2 year tenure there taught me lessons
I would not trade for anything. The people
I met and served, the seniors from whom
I learned; picking their brains and sponging
Wisdom from their hearts of gold. As I look
Back upon that brief season in my journey,
I feast upon the memories and give thanks
To God for such a privilege of service.

Of the many seniors I met, I must share a
Brief story about one of them. We called
Him Mr. Capers, a very gifted man in spite
Of him being an amputee, losing both of
His lower limbs from waist down. Long
Before there were sensitivities and special
Services for handicapped Americans, there
was multi-talented, Mr. Winston Capers.

I never saw a 1000 watt smile upon his face.
Mr. Caper would never be accused of wearing
A smiley face, but his face was painted with
Peace, and his entire demeanor was paved
With contentment and poise. Mr. Capers had
No bitterness to spill out, no score to settle,
And no self- pity to display.

He was a fisherman, highly gifted in arts
And crafts, glass works; and Mr. Capers was
Very articulate in many subjects.

Mr. Capers was very blending and such a good
Fit in every capacity. One day, I was so moved
And overwhelmed by his many abilities and
Versatility that I was compelled to ask him, "Mr.
Capers, is there anything that you cannot do?"
I was deeply moved when Mr. Capers looked
at me very intently and said, "I can't walk".

I wish I had met Mr Capers. His approach to life is wonderful. The smile may not have been seen he lived the 1000 watt life.

He was a 'treasure'; one of my 'Priceless memories'.
