Morning Memory

MORNING MEMORY

When the cold morning air strikes my face
Through the open window I think of Edinburgh
Always cold fresh bracing as the Scots would say
And the pale sunlight of dawn washes the face
Of the grimy buildings they seem anew painted
The cawing of early crows is the sound of new life in the air
A sleepless dog barks in the empty street to show he is alive
Morning again is a fresh start for all
Like the very first morning of life
In the endless blue sky of January
I long for the freedom of the Highlands
