More Than These
Faces, names, storied rememberances we have heard,
Odysseus, Alexander, so many Caesars, Kings of the Middle Ages.
More than these heroes, we remember the heroes of our family.
Wars, battles, contested strife,
Peloponnesus and the Trojan Horse, Caesar's Gaul, the Great Crusades.
More than these, we remember the pillow fights on vacation.
Thor, Zeus, Odin's might,
Egypt's Ahten, Baal, the Gods of the Pantheon of Rome.
More than these, we remember our father's strength and booming voice.
Hera, Venus, Sweet Aphrodite,
Helen of a thousand ships, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Catherine the Great.
More than these, we remember our mother's golden face and soothing hand.
Kin, Clans, Gangs at school,
Father Knows Best, Donna Reed, Leave It To Beaver.
More than these, we remember our cousins and our coming of age in the family.
Not all of our memories are happy ones, so many Loved Ones no longer here,
But those memories are tempered by the joyful times we had with them.
Vacations on a farm, Weddings, Christenings, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Reunions.
The unspoken word, the glance from one to another, the hidden smile on our face,
The laughter and sorrow of times together, and the joy we have in each other's company.
Most of all, we remember and cherish the unconditional love for each other . . . as Family.
