This scene happens too often, good of you to point that out. To write free verse what you need to do is jump in the water with your life jacket- your life jacket is ALL the poetic tropes- simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification and synecdoche, if you use these devices you have either written prose poetry or free verse.
