Notes About The Poem

Momma's Kitchen

So small about 9x9 feet No running water, easy to keep neat The churn set next to the chimney There was I, anger within me Come butter come, isn't this fun I don't like doing this When will it get done Finally dipping out tasty yellow Yellow butter to butter biscuits We could not afford toast Definitely not Triscuits Sometimes pork roast Life was hard and mostly lonely It helped me to make it in life though If I had known how life would flow, if only In understanding I could grow Up there on the large old farm When I was so very young Where life could be a charm But there my childhood was hung

Congratulations, Sara. Beautifully written. I love to look back how we all got started... including difficult, mundane tasks we had to do. I didn't live in a farm, I lived in a small town and a warm house. However, our stove is outside and you do have to start the fire with a paper and a match to light up the fire woods that get so smokey and found myself, gagging with the smoke and crying and cursing....lol

A divine piece with excellent flow between each and every line. This seamless mesh is maintained in a very philosophical work about those critical formative years. Congratulations, Sara, on your well deserved placement, Many thanks for your encouraging words on Golden Gust Glow Howard

I share this old stuff with you. I'm not a city boy. My grandmother churned EVERYDAY. I drank water from a pump. And rode the Gas tank like it was a horse.

TS, Yes, there were degrees of not having anything even then. We had to draw water out of the well with a bucket instead of having the hand pump or windmill. We did have the gas stove and the refrigerator, but I think at first, we had to buy ice and put a chunk in the freezer section and one in the refrigerator until we could get a wall socket in the kitchen. Yes, those gas tanks were used for imaginative play but very dangerous. Thanks for dropping by with your understanding. Sara K
