Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox (MMM) is a ponzi scheme that caught many Nigerians napping. It promised unrealistic and unsustainable mouth watering returns on investment. Many people invested their life savings, some sold properties and even borrowed from banks to invest. Even people who worked in financial institutions fell for it.
Ofcourse, it crashed at some point and estimates say some 3 million Nigerians lost about 18 billion Naira. It was said that some people died of cardiac arrest thereafter, while some commited suicide, etc.
This poem tells the imaginary story of someone who also fell victim and had suicidal thoughts, but decided to live again and start afresh.
MMM’s Noose
Up and down he did pace
Staring blankly into space
Overwhelmed by a world of trouble
With his life now bent double
By his hands, the noose he did make
Should he by the same hands, his life take?
Or, should he with hope, look unto life
And live again, for his kids and wife?
Should he, this ‘shame of an educated fool’
End, by stepping up on that side stool,
Placing the noose around his neck,
And kicking the stool off to snap his neck?
They had come with a promise of wealth;
Glorified thieves that came in stealth
Robbing Peter, only to pay Paul
But, pay themselves most in the long haul
He invested his all and went a-borrowing
Lost it all, and now goes a-sorrowing
Having hoped to receive a triple
But ended up a financial cripple
He chose to live for this life is sweet
Even though, today he does lack meat
MMM has come and gone
Gone with the night, giving birth to his new dawn
