Notes About The Poem

6/30/2026 for Finish in Ten Poetry Contest sponsored by Nette Onclaud

Mirror Nemesis

mirror
my nemesis
shows what I'm not prepared to see
like the one owned by Snow White's evil queen
revealing bags, and sags and spots
and veins and misplaced hair, and bumps
but worse, behind staring eyes
an empty space once held by dreams
and the subtle, quiet despair
of a beaten man

Thanks, Ink! I agree. Mirrors are interesting. They can show you the truth, but maybe they can also lie - or maybe the person looking into it, isn't seeing clearly, through no fault of the mirror.

Oh my. It's so tragic sounding. But very authentic and sincere. Anyway I seriously doubt things are half as bad as that!

Thanks, Andrea. Sometimes, I feel that way, so I tried to embody that, but of course I exaggerate. Sometimes, I like to wallow in the glass half empty. The truth is probably more like this: like everyone else, I've been blessed with wonderful things, and I've had hardships. I've had dismal failures, but also, grand successes.
