Midsummer Night
Standing watch on this warm summer night
Listening to sounds in the soft spectral light
Calling to my soul a song never-ending
That the spirits of the dead forever are sending
Searching the horizon for sails in fear
Asking and praying they never appear
Foreboding is all that is left in my heart
As I remember the faces of those who did part
Not long ago they did appear
Their black sails cast with Ravens filled us with fear
Ships gilded with gold shimmered so bright
In the glow of the moon on a cold winter night
Two score were their numbers as they finally made land
We marveled as they first set foot on the sand
They wore large hats on their heads trimmed with gold
Their clothes were quite fancy their attitude bold
They spoke in a tongue we did not understand
They carried a great flag they stuck deep in the sand
Explorers they were that is what we understood
They came here to help us, came here to do good
Shelter, we gave so they could all rest
Sleep is what they needed to be at their best
Morning came quickly, gloomy shadows were cast
This day started peaceful, that would not last
More ships had arrived silently in the night
Many soldiers appeared in the soft morning light
Swords gilded in gold tight at their sides
My people, we are screaming and running for their lives
Grabbed our women, put them deep in their boat
Many men had been slaughtered, leaving them to float
The ships then took sail, leaving our land
With many of my people lying dead in the sand
Standing watch on this warm summer night
Listening to sounds in the soft spectral light
Calling to my soul a song never-ending
That the spirits of the dead forever are sending
Searching the horizon for sails in fear
Asking and praying they never appear
