Midnight Oil
I’ve written about a thousand poems,
and I hope you have enjoyed at least one.
Someone asked me once how I do it,
turning them out so fast from start to done.
They don’t see me here in this lonely room,
lit only by this single dim bulb’s light.
Toiling through so many lonely hours,
just to get that one single line just right.
It is my hope that every now and then,
someone’s frown will maybe turn to a smile.
Even if they quickly move on past it,
at least I gave them joy for a short while.
That’s what sparks this poet’s inspiration,
and makes it all worth the sweat and the toil.
That’s why you’ll always find me at my desk,
alone and burning late the midnight oil.
