Michigan Farmland

Michigan has blueberries, strawberries,
Apples, and raspberries…
Not dragonfruit.
But there’s still plenty of options!

Michigan doesn’t grow dragonfruit.
Coconut, or bananas.
We have what can survive our seasons.
Rows and rows of our Michigan specialties.

Sometimes it snows an empty feeling.
In this state.
We can still get produce from out of states.
But it’s as sad as the scarf I dropped in the gutter.

The painful shape of Michigan.
The hand that seems smooth but has sandy edges.
Where seaweed washes up.
In the summer only.

Michigan has.
All sorts of desperate feelings within.
Dragonfruit comes to me in a dream.
Ravages.

Hay bales by a barn.
A cider mill.
Fall does things to us.
Michigan feels expansive some days.

Michigan feels rough and jagged.
There’s grass sometimes,
Snow other times.
But there’s still grass under the snow, it’s always hanging around.

In this state.
We pretend not much happens.
Sitting on a beach.
Coconuts never wash up.

We act like Michigan doesn’t grow anything, but it does!
Berries and some of them drop to the ground.
Rabbits grab them up.
That’s the cycle.

Michigan.
The hand which remembers.
Fruit lives here.
So please come back.
