MENTOR
They say he is cut from a different cloth
Dances to a different drummer
Walks with a steady stride where he goes
Offers all enough respect to earn his
Finds humor in his own foibles as well as yours
Values lessons taught by puppies and babies
Will not give you the time of day but will spend it with you
He can change and diaper a baby and rock her to sleep
And later how to spit and change a tire
He will stand, grit his teeth, and allow you to grow
In knowledge, strength, belief and let you experience
All that goes with knowledge, strength and beliefs
He will offer warnings and cautions while hiding his fear
For there is a difference between lessons that are taught
And lessons that are learned through experience
He will find humor in the hardest lessons
And lessons in the laughter of learning
He is a pain in the ass
For he challenges himself
In the same way he challenges you
I believe we have all met them
Those who lead without asking others to follow
Who teach as they pass through our lives
Leaving us to smile and whisper “thank you”
