Memories In Purgatory
"MEMORIES IN PURGATORY"
your poetry will be around
long after you’re gone Eddie.
they’ll help many, they’ll
bring many back to life,
they’ll bring many to
understand that you
understand them.
it’ll make some men wish they
were you and some women wish
you were still alive.
but that isn’t until after
you’re gone Eddie.
your audience hasn’t been
born yet but when they are,
they will read about your
heartache, your small vices
of happiness, your ability to
love, the observation wheel,
the drinks, the smokes, the
purple roses, the plaid
skies, the red wine, the
drives during your graveyard
shifts and the lights of the
city you hoped would consume
you.
even the burnt face that wore
a wool fedora, staring at you
from the walls asking you
just what in the hell you
were doing.
out of all of it, many will
find something in each line
and you’ll live forever.
even the times you had to
impale your tongue with a
spike just to keep the woman
you loved and times you
removed it to save someone.
everything will live forever.
they’ll find something in all
of the sickness that has kept
you writing.
you stay in bed and she
smiles.
she gets ready.
the eternal search.
everyone is looking at her
now.
except me.
I’m waiting.
