Meet the Carbonemys
Carbonemys (Greek for "coal turtle")
Pronounced: car-BON-eh-miss
I am a Carbonemys, a podocnemidid,
An extinct side-necked turtle.
I lived fifty-eight to
Sixty million years ago
During the middle Paleocene period
In swamps of Northeastern Colombia
On the South American continent.
I grew close to ten feet in length
And weighed one ton.
I had a large sized capacious shell.
With my powerful jaws I ate
Comparably sized mammals and reptiles,
Including crocodylians.
I could not retract my head into my shell
Since my neck was too long.
Instead, I bent my neck to one side
So that it laid against my body
And under the ridge of my carapace.
My greatest fear,
Being eaten by a Titanoboa,
A one-ton prehistoric snake.
