Measuring Up
They had all taken leave
said their farewells.
The transplant team were harvesting
Frank's heart, kidneys, eyes
purposeful, tense
I waited with Kevin
the youngest
who'd disappointed
never measured up
to the expectations of his father.
This was his moment of resolve
to say his own farewell
to his father's cadaver
in spite of the nurse's caution
that Frank would be drained
white.
He accepted advice that I should be with him
saying nothing
he stood and thought
calm.
Outside he wept
found peace and strength
measured up.
