May First May Pole May Day

May First called May Day in my youth
We had a maypole with ribbons
We could hold on to them and dance around it
The best part of May Day was the May Baskets

My sister and I would make little baskets from Wallpaper.
Lavishly decorate them with paper doilies and drawings.
We would fill them with popcorn and candies
Deliver them to the neighbors

The trick was to leave them on the doorstep
Ring the doorbell and run like mad
Trying not to get caught.
They were filled with daffodils and violets.

The first flowers of spring.
One time we filled our neighbor;s bluebells
From her own garden
We never did that again
