Mary and Me: A Memory
If the "who" were an unknown, I would wander on,
Yet it is you, to whom I would refer and impose upon.
I know you bear to listen, even when my words are unclear,
And are sat firm beside me, a comfort, when I would shed a tear,
As memories summon forth, and all the more for this time of year,
The northern cold and frothing shores paint the furthest yesterdays,
Clearer, as she could be standing here, like always.
But time is a mirror, not of glass, but gather'd visions of the past;
Yet seems ages us, when ere we look closely, compared to last,
Tho' yesterday remains unaged and immune to future's cast—
"Sweet Mary, get to the lifeboat! The water is coming fast."
These, instead of, "I love...." were the last things she took from me,
Gifts that bore no comfort as the gale tossed her to the sea
Tho' the cold wave claim me, I swam for as long as any man,
But found only flotsam and a life, that to it furthest ran,
Yet wake midst the woe of crying people, families and friends,
To ebbing tides and tired winds; untethered lives and loose ends,
Life stories unfinished; and faith in a merciful god woefully diminished.
I learned the sea is made full of tears,
And a cruel indifference that would justify our fears
Tho' it feed us and slow the advancing foe
It remains cold and maketh common the grieving widow
And fatherless child, tho' by cup or drop, seemest mild
I guess what I'm asking is:
Why were she and I put here?
For her to die so young,
And water fill both our lungs?
I can't eat, I can't sleep;
I just walk this lonely beach.
Was there some lesson you'd teach?
Some wisdom we'd reap?
I long to know
What colours yet adorn the rainbow
For I cannot see,
Save for memory.
Please, tell me,
What's become of me,
And of sweet, sweet Mary?
