Married to a Shadow

Married to a Shadow

Like a wolf cub with my ears pressed against the shoulder of the night, I lay on a stone threshold,
from time to time someone would come and open a window with no frame,
when they left, shadows would rush into the room like a shoal of fish out of water,
they brought me coolness, they anointed my temple with dew gathered from other centuries,
once the shadow-bride came, her lashes burned by a sun that no longer exists.

who are you (she would ask me) with one eye deeper, more full of fog,
who are you who walks without footsteps, dressed in garments of smoke,
and what are you looking for here between silence and silence, where my eyes look at you like a sunken treasure,

the choir of shadows sang, circling above us softly like a wisp of incense,
when the guardians burst into the room with cold torches, with faces of wax,
many of the choir fell, the darkness swallowed them whole, voice and all,
only the echo did they try to pull from their throats with fingers stiff with fear,

the two of us escaped through the crack between two unknown hours,
and since then we have lived in silence in the most untraveled corner of the world,
there where not even light dares to leave its trace,
learning to breathe the same thin air, like one last prayer.
