Mama's Hands

Poem: Mama's Hands
Edited by: Sparkle Jordan

I remember
mama's hands,
and how
worn they were -

Most days
Mama,
would work
sixteen hours
pressing clothes
to earn her pay -

She would
come home weary,
barely standing
on her feet -

Yet,
Mama's hands
would cook dinner,
wash,
and iron clothes
for the next day -

I use to
look at her,
and
wish that
I could
do something
to help mama
make it through -

But,
mama would smile
and say,
"Mama's gonna
make it baby" -

"I'm gone do
what I always
do" -

"Don't worry
child,
everything's
gonna be okay" -

And
right at
that moment,
mama's hands
would fold
in prayer-

She would pray
for
 a blessing ,
and
a brighter day....
without
despair -

I would
kiss mama,
and say:
Good night,
as I went
on my way -

And
before
I could fall
asleep -

I could hear
Mama's hands
sorting
through bills
she had to pay -

At some point
mama would
close her eyes
to rest her body
for another
sixteen.......

Sixteen hours
of pressing clothes
to earn her pay....

I remember
Mama's hands -
